The Magic Fish
Once, many moons ago, much longer than my granddad’s toe, there were two boys called Dafydd and Idris And they were going fishing in the river Ewenny. They were walking down a cobbled path. Willow trees towered overhead, their branches hanging into the water. |
On one of the trees there was a tattered, rusty sign and they could just make out. The words that said, ‘DANGER, NO FISHING!’ but they did not take any notice of it so when the boys found a quiet spot on the river bank they cast out into the river. Straight away they got a bite. “Idris, help!” called Dafydd. Idris came running over to Dafydd and they both tugged. Suddenly the boys fell backwards and out of the water came a big black boot. “Oh, all that work for a stupid old boot!” groaned Idris. So the two boys cast out again as soon as Dafydd cast out he got another tug. “Flippin’ welsh cakes it’s a big ‘n’!” said Dafydd. The boys reeled it in. Slowly a strange fish with vibrant red eyes rose above the water and an eerie feeling came over the boys. Suddenly a lightning bolt hit the line and the fish fell into the boot. Before the boys eyes the laces turned into long grasping arms and out of the sole sprouted four little legs . From that day the boot continued to torment them and if they ever tried to plant some plants they always got stomped on so if you ever go fishing in the river Ewenny and you fish out a boot always throw it back in as fast as you can! |
