|
There was an old farmer named Dyffydd who lived in an ancient crumbled down cottage with his wife Mair. Dyffydd moaned about his job every single day and every day he crossed the Ewenny River on the stepping-stones to milk the cow. One day he was extremely grumpy and when he crossed the Ewenny River on the stepping stones, carelessly, and he slipped on the fourth stepping-stone and fell in. Then he saw a magnificent creature emerge from the crystal-clear water. Dyffydd gazed at her and instantly fell in love. She had glamorous golden locks wrapped around her delicate skin. Her Saphire-blue eyes glistened in the sunlight. Her gorgeous tail flicked in the tranquil calm water. As soon as she noticed him she glided towards him and lifted him out of the water onto the bank of the river. Then she dived in without a single ripple. Dyffydd, amazed, just went straight home and when he got into his house he stomped straight up the medieval spiral staircase, without say anything to Mair. The same thing had been happening for a couple of weeks, every day he came home soaking wet and without saying anything to Mair. Then one day the mermaid told Daffydd, ‘Do not tell anyone of our secret friendship.’ Daffydd didn’t take any notice and went straight home quite happily. In the middle of the night Mair got up and was on her way out Daffydd wondered where Mair was going so he asked her, ‘Where are you going Mair?’ ‘ I am going to try and find out way you are coming back soaking wet everyday and never say anything to me !’ Daffy said, ‘Don’t go I will show you how I am wet everyday!, come with me to the river’. So Daffydd led Mair to the river. As they crossed the stepping- stones and on the fourth steppingstone Daffydd jumped in. Mair looked startled, ‘Come in!’ Finally Mair jumped in Daffydd said, ‘Look into the water.’ So they looked under the water and there wasn’t even a tinkle. Then Daffydd remembered what the mermaid had said earlier that day and he never saw the mermaid again. |
