JEMMA (JAYNI) I am gonna tell our story. It’s strange and really quite scary but we just have to tell you. Hi my name is Jayni. I have four sisters, Ella, Frankie, Jaz and Lily. One day we went down to the Ewenny river after school. We were just playing and paddling in the shallows when I looked down into the water and I saw a figure floating towards us. It was a face!
CHARLOTTE (LILY) It was coming closer to us and as it did I could swear I heard a voice. Such a haunting whisper of a voice I wasn’t sure it even was one! The icy water swirled around our feet and it suddenly became windy. A mobile phone rang. I looked in my pocket for mine but it was my sister Ella’s, not mine. (Seeing her phone says “Lucie calling” Ella says)
JAYDI (ELLA) Hiya Lucie!!!!!! How are you? lucie? Is this lucie’s mum? Hello? (And she’ll make it up)
CATHERINE (THE VOICE/JAZ) Hello? Hello? I haven’t seen you in ages,I’ve been in the river for so long. Please come back and help me, midnight tonight. Please come back. Come back COME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JAYDI(ELLA) I was so scared I stood there trembling. Once I got my senses back I decided to tell my sisters the strange and peculiar happening on the phone. We ran straight home only to see our mum standing there half doing the washing up but strangely half looking at us while looking forward.
LUCIE (FRANKIE) She was holding her favourite china plate and staring out of the window. But what was she looking at? All we could see was our plain ordinary garden! We all know that adults can’t see what children see.
ALL But can children see what adults see?
LUCIE (FRANKIE) We tried to tell her what had happened but something caught our eyes. Mum’s eyes widened with a sudden shock.
JEMMA (JAYNI) She started scrubbing and scrubbing. The plate cracked! But did she stop scrubbing? No. her hand was bleeding bits of china sticking out of her flesh! She turned around slowly, her eyes still bulging and bloodshot. Suddenly she snapped out of her trance and said “good afternoon girls.” As she was half listening we started to explain.
CHARLOTTE (LILY) Mum Ella just had a spooky phone call. We saw this face under the water as well, I think the face might have been the voice! It told us that we had to go to the river at midnight tonight! We could tell mum was only half listening but then she suddenly laughed silently to her self then she snapped “ Of course not girls! That is well past your bed time. 8 o’clock inside the house and 10 o’clock bed time! I will lock you in your room tonight!! Sorry girls!”
JAYDI (ELLA) That night we were locked in our own rooms we felt like prisoners. We said goodnight to mum and each other and went to sleep. I lay down my head and I had a horrible tingling sensation in my stomach. We were all having the same dream.
CATHERINE (JAZ) A lady had been drowned in the Ewenny river years and years and years ago. I don’t know the ladies name now even though I was calling it over and over and over again.
LUCIE (FRANKIE) Our mother knew her, we all seemed to know her but how could we? I have never heard her name or seen her face before.
JEMMA (JAYNI) That’s when I heard them. My sisters in my head, talking to me, telling me to jump. A three story house and my window on the top floor but I found myself looking at my bedroom window. They were telling me over and over and over jump! (People say jump) so I did. But when I landed unharmed thank goodness but I don’t know how, my sisters were there with me. But we weren’t in our back garden oh no, we were on a muddy grass bank right by the river.
CHARLOTTE (LILY) We were where the river should have been but where was the river? It was one minute past midnight!!! We looked around. All we could see were dead trees and silver fish flopping on the wet stones where the river was. Honestly there was no life there at all
JAYDI (ELLA) We stepped into the wetness of the dark stones that separated the dry ones from the wet. I heard a noise in the back round. It sounded like water. It couldn’t have been water because the river was gone. We were wrong of course. The worst part was when we saw the huge crashing waves surrounding us!
LUCIE (FRANKIE) HEEEEEELLLLLLLPPPP UUUUUUSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our legs wouldn’t move our cries were not heard we were trapped! No one could help us now! The wave grew bigger and bigger and we saw the lady from the beginning of our journey.
