A long long time from here there was a little old cottage Ewenny River it was near.

In that cottage lived a little man, his name was Morgan. The cottage was ever so scruffy, there were tea stains all over the carpet in the lounge, dirty dishes were stacked up high in the kitchen and in the garden there were brambles and stinging nettles entwined in the long grass.

One day, Morgan wanted to get away from the ugliness of his cottage so he decided to go to the bubbling crystal clear Ewenny River. He peered into the icy cold water and watched colourful shoals of fish dart by. One beautiful fish, of red, blue, yellow, pink – all the colours you could ever think of, caught his eye. It suddenly leapt high out of the water before his eyes and the scales became skin, long colourful hair and slender arms and legs. Morgan, before he knew what he was doing, asked her to marry him. She was thrilled and agreed but she warned him that if he sent her back to the river in any way three times, she would have to return forever and he would never see her again.

A year later they got married and had a beautiful cake in the shape of a fish. They stumbled back in the dark and Megan came across the Ewenny River. She then realised that she couldn’t come back two more times.

A few months later old Mrs Delaney had a fire in her cottage. Morgan sent Megan to get water from the river, but it was only when the fire was put out that Megan realised; she had been to the river again.

Megan and Morgan took great care not to go back to the river until they retired.

It was Megan’s birthday and Morgan got her a beautiful picture of a fish all the colours you could ever think of. This reminded Megan of the river and she asked Morgan if he could take her back. He cried but said, ‘yes’.

If you go past Ewenny River today and see an old rundown cottage, that might have been Morgan’s.
